From Naples to the world
While many successful investors are born into privilege, Antonio Velardo's story is one of determination, resilience and reinvention. Born in Naples, Italy, in 1977 to a modest family, Antonio grew up with dreams that extended beyond his surroundings. After high school he set his sights higher than simply seeing the world — he wanted to learn how to fly.
At 19 he moved to Florida to pursue his FAA commercial pilot license, training at Phoenix Aviation School in Daytona Beach and earning a multi-engine instrument-rated commercial license, later converted to a European JAA certification at Capua Aeroschool. For several years he lived the life of a pilot, flying across continents and immersing himself in different cultures — "searching for answers", as he describes it.
Engineering a new path
In time Antonio realized that the pilot's lifestyle, though exhilarating, was not the path to his true ambitions. He enrolled at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom, graduating with top honors and a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering — the beginning of a flourishing career in real estate.
Antonio began in real estate sales in Spain and Cape Verde, quickly rising to senior positions before launching his own projects as an investor and developer in Italy and North Africa. When the 2008 financial crisis hit, he pivoted strategically to the United States, where his companies acquired distressed assets from banks and transformed them into profitable, cash-flowing investments.
A lifelong learner
A passionate student of business, Antonio has built one of the more unusual academic résumés in the investing world. He studied Value Investing at Columbia Business School — the intellectual home of Benjamin Graham's discipline — and completed Executive Education in Advanced Equity Valuation at NYU Stern School of Business. He graduated from the Blockchain Strategy Programme at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, earned an MSc in Digital Currency at the University of Nicosia, and completed a Master's in Value Investing and Business-Cycle Theory at Universidad de las Hespérides. He also holds a master's degree in Mass Communication from the University of Florida, alongside continuing studies in corporate finance and business strategy.
Today
Antonio is Chief Investment Officer of Moat Investing, an equity research boutique that applies the value-investing principles championed by Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffett: buying businesses with durable competitive advantages at a margin of safety. He also serves as President of Real Capital Ventures, Chairman of Real Capital Caribe and Chairman of American Wise Investments, with real estate and hospitality ventures across Europe, the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean. He shares his investment theses and market commentary on this site.
